Hunter S Thompson wrote:The music business is a cruel and shallow money trench, a long plastic hallway where thieves and pimps run free, and good men die like dogs. There's also a negative side.

That was a long time ago. It is possible now to bypass the industry. Things have changed.

I think you mean bypass "The Industry", as in The "Major Labels", "them" etc. Because of course if there is an "industry" in the general sense we're all a part of it...so if you mean it's possible to bypass the entire "industry", I guess you intend to give your music away permanently? (CC licensing only has 1 license--and its very recent--for doing this btw.)

i have no problem with those who wish to give it
all away.
we all loved the young girls who were dedicated to giving away their talents. naturally, no one wants those girls a few years later....

compared to young girls selling their talents, organized by greedy pimps?
As the quoted research shows, people are buying more and more music, the fastest growing market is the great ol' internet. And giving away your music is part of giving people a reason to buy your full products (be it vinyls, concerts, licence for soundtrack or commercials etc, your creativity is the limit). Its a market the record industry doesnt fully contriol, which is why they are taking such drastic actions against file sharing websites like Piratebay etc. It has nothing to do with artists or bringing more money to the artists. They wont see any of the money from the lawsuits.
There IS money to be made. Numbers show that clearly. The downturn of album sales is just as much a question of convenience and competing platforms like videogames and movies (which there is money to be made from as musicians as well) but as long as people are being stubborn and seeing the 'net as a threat rather than a marketing platform, well they are fucked, and i don't feel sorry for them

again, the REAL money is as tied up as ever, whether the sales are on the internet or not.
no one is arguing that there is money to be made.
the net is NOTHING but a matketing device in the end, and i assure you, the INDUSTRY is using it, while claiming that "it's evil, stay away", which only improves sales. the money is the same as always. for some independants, things are better, communication is definitely easier anyway, but there have ALWAYS been successful independants.
as to compared to girls with pimps, a good pimp takes care of his stable, if just because it's a good way to maximize one's profits from one's investment. either way, girls who sleep with everyone soon become sleazed up, washed out, used up receptacles. to use a further metaphor, i'm always being told how wonderful the "exposure" is, but i know that people die of exposure.

also, any high dollar whore has a pimp or a madame for protection and contacts and would only earn a tiny fraction without the agency. the real music biz pimps are the agents. record companies are more like mob bosses who loan the whorehouse the startup money and provide protection for the pimp, madame or agency.
it's a great idea to use the internet for networking, distribution and publicity and a good drug dealer always gives free samples if he knows that the product is good. to think that some unknown schmuck with no funds to mount a focused, planned campaign will be able to become self sufficient through filesharing is naive and ludicrous in my opinion. i find it insulting that i'm expected to believe in such a fantasy. i'm willing to believe that it CAN happen, but not that there's any real odds that it will. i haven't seen it and i know plenty of people making livings through music. the truth is, because the internet is mostly anonymous, it's pretty easy for someone with deep pockets to create a buzz that looks "grassroots" but is actually thouroughly controllled propaganda. a good example of this is Obama's campaign through the grassroots organization called "move on". move on appears to be nothing more than local people with progressive concerns getting together and having letter writing campaigns and fundraisers like local carwashes, all in local homes, but it's actually controlled and funded by big money man George Soros. corporate types are QUITE well aware of how to use the web.
if you can set it up for me in a way that works to keep me and my crew comfortably employed for the rest of our days, i'd happily give you a cut(for real!). i'm not against anything that allows me to work my art without money problems by increasing my audience to the point of self sufficiency.

Having a history of banging around Cleveland back in the days when Trent was handing out cassettes at his gigs, I'll portend that the so-called open source or 'constant comment' model IS working for very few artists that spend almost ALL their time promoting their gigs rather than selling songs piece-meal. For a short time my band at the time made more money off of t-shirts than the music.
Otherwise, ALL the old models are gone. Might as well get over it.
I give CD's 5 years max.
The RIAA nazi's are trying to get rid of EmPukeThrees so that they can make a commission off streaming radio licensing - which is also increasingly being corrupted. Controlling airwaves/spectrum will NOT work (they just don't know it yet).
Pretty soon they'll be trying to license the air we breathe.

Henry The Sixth, Part 2 Act 4, scene 2, 71–78
All:
God save your majesty!
Cade:
I thank you, good people—there shall be no money; all shall eat
and drink on my score, and I will apparel them all in one livery,
that they may agree like brothers, and worship me their lord.
Dick:
The first thing we do, let's kill all the lawyers.
Shakespeare had it right over 400 years ago.
