thanks for the link braincell, that clip is brilliant. it's funny to hear at the beginning there is a slight possibility they could create a black hole that would suck the earth into oblivion leaving a giant sign that reads DOH! in empty space

black holes are either stellar ones or premordial after the proposed few minutes after the singularity.

the energy available by colliders is by far too small to create black holes that suck earths......
man, you owe me a new lcd

-btw

the definition "dimension" is "a measurement of spatial extent". the word comes from a latin word meaning "a measurement" or "to measure carefully", french, spanish and italian speakers can see this....therefore, when we speak of dimensions, we speak of straight lines which can be measured(the EXTENT of something). if at least 50 dimensions have been proven math-matically, then we have proven how truly ignorant and blind humans MUST be, regardless of their level of "learning", since we don't even know what we really are or look like, seeing as how our perceptors only see 3 dimensions(height depth width) and ONE POINT of the 4th(time, you can measure it, and it actually is the same as length width or any other dimension. time is a measurement of how far space extends along the z axis) moving forward from point to point. since every point on every line is connected to every other point, as a whole, then nothing is lost or gained and nothing happens, except in our limited experience.

Well,

Mathematical topology doesn't have anythings to do with physical topology,
we often use "common" words to give a sense of what it represent, but that's all.

We define measure and dimensions correlated to the problem we analyse (I mean, the tool is adapted to what we seek), It doesn't have to be linked to any physical representation. It whould be too limitative. Look at state space model in automatic science for example.

nope, the word is what it is.

...as humpty dumpty discovered("words mean precisely what i want them to mean") before his big fall..

Hi,

Yes but lewis Caroll was a mathematician.

Mind you, but to illustrate this let's look at two examples:

In coding theory, there is a definition of distance (hamming distance) which represent the "distance" of two symbols in the polynomial space. Doesn't have any sense in physical domain.

in recent France history, the same category of mens was designed as "terrorist" (invader point of view) and resistant (local population point of view).

As Albert Einstein said: everything is relative!

well, that's a thorough misunderstanding of what i said, but it's all good.

no, things are only relative in regards to an observer, not in reality, except that things are all related, which the description of 4 dimensions proves...

the word dimension means what it means. if you wish to describe something other than a dimension, use the proper word.

spacetime is a bad word. it suggests that time and space are not the same thing unless in a combined name, but time is a measurement of space by definition.

all this theory disguised as fact....as MD69 said, these are descriptions used for specific purposes...you cannot know that which you can't directly experience no matter how smart you get. you can only use descriptions that are more or less useful.....

Can you gods tell me if there's anything reasonable to say about why light is a constance?
All the sunlight (photons) of one day falling on earth seems to weigh one kilogram, so there's mass involved :-)

the answer is why not? the equations work that way. it doesn't have to be absolute fact.

there has been no knowledge exchanged here, just an exchange of more or less useful metaphors, the use of which may or may not be offensive....

this clip is funny in a way that I posted an example how 'scientists' usually argue about astrology and Sagan does exactly the same in the video...
I would have expected a little bit more from someone as highly regarded as he obviously is.

Astrology is about influences, it's not about fate and causal events.
No 'serious' astrologist would ever sign what Sagan described as the essence of astrology.
Just because he was a celebrity doesn't turn his point of view into truth. ;)

don't get me wrong - there's no need to argue about the subject. Everyone may have his or her own opinion, but the clip simply misses it's own topic.
As mentioned, I have studied more than enough scientific literature (and I still continue to do) to not buy into arbitrary hocus-pocus... :D

maybe we should ask Stevie Wonder about the relevance of light... ;) :D
so what do we really know ?

In an experiment where subjects wore blinders blocking all light for 6 days, the subjects experienced vivid, pleasant hallucinations after 3 days.

I would like to try this if I can get someone to care for me. I assume the effect would eventually wear off as blind people don't constantly hallucinate.

A similar effect of audio hallucinations happens to people who suddenly go deaf. This is rare though. About 1-2 percent will hear sounds and or vivid music from their memory which does not stop.
