I started with the Emulator II and Ensoniq Mirage and over the years went to the E III and Roland S760s, Oberheim DPXs and the last sampler was the E5000 Turbo, and very rarely did I audition a sample that wasn't useful.
As a matter of fact I have a few on Solaris. The Old Fairlights Moods and some Spectrasonics stuff. The sample stuff from the '90s just sounds good still and doesn't really need articulations. Velocity switched layers or ModWheel switches work fine.

I have spent hundreds on libraries w/ good demos that sucked, but I got to watch him play in realtime on YouTube, and all of his Electric and Acoustic Guitars are great stuff.
Smart guy w/ chops too as he used a toy controller, but it didn't matter.
I think next decent pay I am going to get the Rickenbacker just because I keep hearing Roundabout and Siberian Chef..............sorry............I mean Khatru.

That´s exactly the sequence I went thru too, except there are also my AKAI hardware samplers and the EMU E64.
There are killer sounds working very well up today and I appreciate STS works w/ AKAI format, but unfortunately it doesn´t with EMU EOS and I´d have to go thru the nitemare of converting everything to Soundfonts.

Had a keyboard Mirage hooked to my Atari in the early 90's. Thing was more musical than most, even today.

There's something to be said for limitations. They're a big plus in music. You can always make it rock with what you've got

there's an Ensoniq SQ80 on German eBay atm... hard to resist
but then I'm more into the natural stuff recently. Might end up with a banjo like below
