Tom, build that little circuit, run your bass through it via one of your bass amps > appropriate mic & report back with some feedback please (no pun intended) :D

well, I lack any serious microphone / preamp gear, but I certainly would feed the bass through the chip directly - probably adding a FET impedance converter.
Imho a 'flat' soundsource like a speaker membrane can't bring out the details in a way an acoustic instrument or even more a trained voice (not mine) do :D
Yet it would be interesting to compare the chip to the standard 4558, 741, 082, 5532 or the like - the local supplier doesn't have them in stock btw...

If you add the input stage network consisting of an inductor & resistor on the + & - inputs as suggested in the docs, the chip will be able to handle all sorts of input sources right down to below 10 ohm. If you build something with it, don't forget to use a variable resistor between pins 1 & 8 so that you can manually adjust the gain. I guess a nice stepped pot would be ideal. :D
