True. And a lot of things have seemed just beyond reach, but soon possible with the latest technology (which may be science in general, machinery, subliminal messages and psychiatry of the subconscious, mind-altering drugs, computers) - things like peace and plenty for all, or alternately, an insidious way to control the masses. And none of them have come to pass because humans have a way of surmounting these stupidities (so far).
All I can say is, I work a fair bit with different types of programming, from device drivers to business intelligence, and am not aware of any AI that really resembles human intelligence. Because we call data storage MEMORY, people jump too quickly to assume that it really resembles human memory. Of course, in some ways, it imitates what we are able to understand and conceptualize about 'our memories' (through refinement of thinking and development of concepts). Studying of human psychology may indeed yield a predictive program - which may be unable to predict the actions of a 6 year old. The idea that at some point a 'vast consciousness' is going to just spring into existence is absurd to me. But I could be wrong. If I'm wrong, I'll buy you a coffee, OK? (Even in the gravest of situations I still have a taste for black humor, and black coffee).
"just keep telling yourself, it's just a dream."
I don't have to, there's a catchy song that reminds me of that.
Peace!

AI does not have to model human intelligence at all to become self aware or even useful.
still, the AI itself isn't the biggest problem. a bigger problem is "the link", which is well within the realm of current tech. scientists were remote controlling chickens in the early '50s via implanted electrodes.
did you listen to the Huxley(founding member of Tavistock) speech?

well, if they're authorities and that's what we think of them, there may be a problem....obviously, the authority isn't genuine....oops, logic...

Intelligence is a property ? Elaborate.
Intelligence is at the "building blocks" of existence.
