Re: Going for a new computer - please, some help will be coo

Post by Nestor »

Ok, the GB-BK arrived today, it looks to be a really good board. I have installed the CPU, the Fan, the RAM, the Graphic card and the two Pulsar I cards.

When installing the TDM cable, I started to wander...The cable has three connections, should I use 1 and 2, or should I use 1 and 3?

Should I install the OS with the cards on, or should I remove the cards, perhaps installing just one of them, the master one? I ask these basic questions because it is the first time I do this, and I don’t know if I can install both cards at the same time, been one related to 4.5 SCOPE software and the other to 5.1.

Any advice you guys may want to give to me in this stage would be greatly appreciated.

don't use the middle connector.
it doesn't matter if you install the cards first, before the os.
both cards will be running v5.1 even though only one has keys. install both cards and then the Scope installer will install the driver for both cards when it runs. it doesn't matter which card is seen first. the system will accept any valid keys from any card.

Yep, it just works itself out naturally. Only one of my 3 cards has 5.1. Another has 5.0 and the other one, no software, so I have no idea...

I have build it already, installed a trial of Win 8.1 Pro 64 bits with great expectations... but it is not only the Metro thing I don't like..., anyway, this is not a problem because it can be fixed easily with a third party app and all, I know, but the “cloud concept” following me to toilet, no way, that really is bothersome! There are many things you cannot switch off in regard with the way it works, and all these trash in relation with Microsoft accounts… no way! I will not accept such an invasion of privacy, least of all today, when the third world war has already started, just as I suspected it would, very unfortunately, so cybernetic attacks are going to get violent and wild, we better protect our systems and privacy.

Shi-it, now I've still missed it!

But you're right about the privacy thing, it does concern me too of course.
Last week I saw Citizenfour, the great documovie of Laura Poitras about Edward Snowden and Glenn Greenwald from 2014. A suspense movie, even when you know already the outcome.

A small positive thing is that the European Court of Justice declared the Safe Harbor Decision is invalid, explicitly based on Snowden's revelations.

And there's the small succes of Facebook user Max Schrems from Austria who won his case.
There's a long way to go, the judges offer more hope than the politicians at power :(

Yep yep. It's getting crazy. My LG Smart TV was watching what was watching so I exchanged it to another brand and I will never put it online... I'm glad I'm not the only one that's freaking out about this. Some people think it's paranoia, but this is the real s**t.

Yes, it works great. I have the Ultimate, but I think it's basically the same as pro version.

I’ve been reading carefully the differences between them both and ultimate has some more enterprise features than professional, many more languages and a special security pack called something like bitlock, yes, it has much more security for servers.

Professional is perfect for us because it allows you to add as much RAM as you may want and then some…192 GB. Then, ultimate has a lot of download upgrades coming up all the time, while pro is significantly smaller in that respect.

I wanted to go win 8.1... but... it is better losing some performance than having a headache

The gigabyte ga z97x ud5h bk BIOS is amazing, I like it a lot, very easy an comfortable

there's no significant performance loss with win 7 over win8 or win10.
just because it's newer doesn't mean that it's better, although win 10 is pretty nice.

I like very much this philosophical approach to life: “you get something, you give something”, yes, and it is good to remind and hold this thought so not to be so demanding on others, and to not become an egoist, too.

Well, theoretical arguments leads you to believe win 8.1 is, average, 25% faster than win 8.1 in some specific areas, like graphics and it has a better use of RAM. But then I understood that, yes, it is true there is a difference, but only when you consider using these OSs as they come to you, without tweaking anything after installation. Windows 8.1 and 10 are slightly faster in some areas, and 7 it is in other areas. Now, if you work out a bit with 7 it is like 8.1 or 10, for instance, as I understand, removing or not using “aero”, and chanching the way the cache works.

New UEFI BIOS work in a different way when preparing for a boot from a particular DVD, I am having problems with it at the moment... they say you have to prepare BIOS to recognice CD/DVD drivers... I didn't know about this one. Well, let see if I can get to it...

This is exactly the problem, I will try what this brother did:

Really? I have UEFI bios and it boots from DVD just fine on default settings. But I always boot from USB anyway. Just clone the DVD ISO image to an 8GB USB stick. MS has an utility to do that...

Read the link I have send just before, if I cannot fix it this way, I will do your way. I guess the utility you are talking about is in the Microsoft page? Cheers.

I've never ever seen this problem. That is really odd. All my computers, and I've had many, could always boot from the DVD drive.

I think this is the tool I was talking about... should work fine.

Good luck my friend!

Sometimes newer is not always better, that's why I'm rocking the PCI cards hard

remember, "up to" doesn't mean that you will get the "up to" number.
because an os CAN be faster or more efficient doesn't mean that the software can actually take advantage of any improvement. generally, software is way behind os development, especially when operating systems get changed like dirty diapers. in reality, win7 and win10 machines do the same amount of work.

win10 does "feel" great when using it. it's certainly an improvement over win7, but there's no real significant improvement in the amount of work you can do(i guess i get a thrill saying this). win8 isn't worth mentioning at this point. it's sole purpose was to get you into win10. actually, win7/8/10 are all the same os. win10 is merely win7 service pack 3.

i'm sure that eventually new software will require win10 and won't work in win7, but we're nowhere near that point right now.

yes, even with an UEFI bios, you should be able to boot from DVD. there are often little quirks, unfortunately.
