Miroslav Vitous orchestral libaries has been the standard in orch. libraries for many years. They are extremely expensive, and are going to be crushed by a library for Gigasampler called GigaStrings coming out soon (I am betatester on the project). The price will be around 1000$ for this string library containing 15-20 CD's. The quality of these samples are unmatched. Try http://www.gigastrings.com . There are brass libraries for Gigastring, most important Quantum Leap Brass, which is for both orchestral and jazz/pop use. No dedicated Gigasampler brass library for orch use only - YET - but someone are working on that...

And yes you can convert AKAI CD's... Not all is converted properly though, but most things are.

Yeah, soundtrack/orchestral music almost <i>requires</i> Giga, so you can use high quality samples for that realistic sound. If I was doing anything "accoustic" using a sampler, Giga would be the one to get.

However, I'm more into strange, esoteric, exotic and electronic sounds so lots of memory to "accurately" reproduce "real" instruments isn't important, but rather the complexity and ability for extreme alterations and modulations.

I think Hans Zimmer uses Giga for his own custom made sample sets...

Now I understand what you mean MeloManiac. Does Giga work fine with Pulsar? It seems a powerful tool because of the posibility of so many MIDI channels at the same time.

Hi,

my understanding of what modulation comprises of is:
- chorus
- flanger
- phaser

Is this the extent of what you need on a per-instrument basis, or is there other neat stuff? Generally, what other extreme modification can you do?

Myself, I'm kind of in the middle. I'm learning composition, so gigasampler sounds appealing, but I also love the estoric sounds too. Oh yes, what external sampler are you using?

Regarding sound libraries. Has anyone heard of Miroslav (I'm not sure how it's spelled). I'm not sure where to look with regard to sample libraries. I haven't found anyone who stocks any kind of range in Ireland yet.

I have been looking on and off and on for a while now. The answers I have received so far are:
- we don't do those
- we've got xyz... (low budget scratchy stuff), and I don't know what I'm selling, so I can't answer your questions

How much are these gigasampler libraries going for? I take it there's no brass libraries yet then?

Nestor, I haven't tried Gigasampler/Studio with Pulsar as I have dedicated a machine to running Gigastudio - that is the best way to make it work without any problems. But Pulsar does have the 'GSIF' drivers just take a look in your Windows devices folder in Pulsar, so I would expect it to work fine.

what about the latency of the gsif-modules?

i heard it´s quite high...

The prices for a complete set of orchestral instruments seems to be a little out of my budget at the moment. It's a pity there isn't a high quality all-in-one approach.

Mo, high latency? Not at all... from 2-10ms depending on how good drivers you have for your soundcard. But for a program delivering up to 160 HD-streamed voices and (albeit bad) realtime effects, I would say it is pretty amazing... I don't have any problems using it at all, never notice latency.

well, i heard (have read) in the CW forum once, that the gsif-modules within pulsar do have a quite high latency...

is that not true? would be cool. where can i get a demo of that gigastuff...?

In fact GSIF driver are quite fast, but they're not steady. sometimes it's 7ms, and later it's 13ms, still later you're at 5ms. Depending on the samples you play.

But it's true that this software is pretty amasing with polyphonie at 160 (~130 for my AMD 1Ghz with LogicAudio 4.6).

Sice my computer isn´t quite an actual machine, I never tested the giga studio, but the gigasampler worked just fine with all of the 8 outputs, my latency was about 24 ms, but it was constant, so I could use the delay parameter for correction...that has been still impossible with the sts-4000. The thing what impressed me, was that the Volkszämpler had a constant midi-timing instead...but only using cubase...and I´m a logic user...So I wait until somebody´s making a box for just creating music...the end of all pc´s is in the next future cause there will be no allround pc like every store is advertising.

Yes, personnaly, i've change my GigaStudio160 for STS3000. It's more than sufficient for my need, and timing is better (sample perfect). I can import sf2 more easily (i meen, it's working...) and it's compatible with Akai sample CD while Giga need a third party application to do this.

But again, GigaStudio 160 is a VERY GOOD sampler, especialy if you do orchestral thing.

And by now if you've got a powerful PC (or even a sufficient 400mhz one with the STS) you can do it easily on one box...

Modulation capabilities:

The ability to route controllers such as Velocity, Aftertouch, MIDI CCs, Ribbons, LFOs, Keytracking, etc, to things like LFO Rate, Filter Cutoff, Filter Resonance, Envelope time, etc.

Also the amount of LFOs factors into the modulation capabilities, as does the number of filters (and their slope), filter types, envelopes...

The STS can do nearly everything, except when you want to program it to mangle a sample like a synthesizer would (a couple LFOs, various envelopes)-- but then again you could simply use the individual outs, and route them into a Modular patch or whatever, to get "more."
