Hi

For the last week or so I've been playing with my new system..

[Dell Inspiron 8100 laptop]
1.2GHz P3
512MB PC-133 SDRAM
Intel 815 mobile chipset
32MB GeForce2Go AGP graphics
1400x1050 TFT

Magma CB2S 2-slot PCI expansion with SCSI
( http://www.magma.com/pci/pci_2slot_main.html )
2x PulsarI cards
SFP3.1a (running at 13ms latency - PulsarI minimum)
Windows XP Pro (tweaked)
Logic 5.2

Basically it works very well

Seen 1 or 2 PCI overloads but it's only happened when loading DSP's (loading a device or changing no. of voices), not during playback.

It's working solid enough to make me abandon my previous CUSL2 setup  I'm sure it wouldn't pass a heavy Masterverb test but to be honest that's not important to me... it runs heavy projects just as well as my CUSL2 did, with lots of routing and delays and other effects like Tdrive, 1 or 2 verbs, 1 or 2 monosynths, and 1 or 2 modulars (depending on what they're doing).

Intended use is Logic+Pulsar for mobile use, and, in the studio, using as a standalone pulsar box hooked up to the ADAT connectors on the RME Hammerfall in my AthlonXP Logic box.

peace

As I posted a couple of questions / problems, it might be useful to put my setup here.

DAW:
Athlon XP2000+ (boxed)
Asus A7N266-C
512 MB RAM
IBM 40GB, 7200 (Windows XP Home, Programs)
IBM 60GB, 7200 (Data, Samples)
LiteOn DVD Drive
Pulsar II
Pulsar XTC
Matrox G550
D-Link Network Adapter
19" Rack Mount
2 X NEC 95F Monitor

Software:
Windows XP Home Edition
Cubase SX 1.03
Halion
Kontakt
FM7
B4
Pro52
VST Drum Sessions
The Grand
Virtual Guitarist
Various Sample-CDs (Drum loops, etc.)
Waves Bundle
SFP 3.1c
SEKD Sonoscope

Additional Equipment:
Fatar Masterkeyboard 88 Keys weighted hammer
Houston Midi-Controller for Cubase SX
Waldorf MicroQ
Line 6 Pod Pro
Midiman 2x2 Midi-Interface
SPL Headamp
SPL Keymix
Fostex Digital Patchbay
Sony DAT 760
Philips CD Burner
Ibanez Artist Guitar with Seymour Duncan Pickup
Crafter Acoustic Guitar with Fishman B-Band Pickup

The Pulsar Cards run in XTCmode with 7ms latency. With that setup I can run 10 Masterverbs with one (!) Pulsar Card. I did not try how many MVs are loadable with two cards.

I record directly from SX into my DAT. The Cubase SX Master-Inserts are:

1. GraphEQ
2. PsyQ
3. Optimaster
4. UVhr22 (Dithering)

At the same time I have the SEKD Sonoscope loaded (analyzer) to "see" my music (thank you at0mic). The DAT-Recordings (only the nice ones) are then burnt on CD.

Okay here it is, make sure you sit well so you don't slide to the floor under the table:

Via Epia C3 800MHz
Pulsar 1+
256MB
60GB IBM disk

Thats it. The pulsar costs about 3x the rest of the pc. But it works, it is the first pc I could get the pulsar working in without the usual messages, so there it will stay.

My setup is like this:

4U ATX case w/350w PS
Asus CUSL2-BP w/1Ghz P3
512 Mb CL2 PC133 SDRAM
Matrox G450 Dual Head AGP
Creamware Pulsar 2 (PCI 2)
Intel eepro100 (PCI 4)
Adaptec 2930 SCSI (PCI 5)

20Gb disk to boot and run SW from
60Gb disk for audio
Pioneer ATAPI DVD drive
Yamaha SCSI CDRW
Edirol 4x4 USB midi

Using this setup with Logic 4/5
Acid Pro2/3
Wavelab 3
Cooledit Pro 1.2/2
ProTools Free
Cubase SX
Kontact, Absynth, Battery, Reaktor
Various other noise software....

So far this entire system has worked great, and the only problem I had with logic stopping ASIO looks like it may be mitigated by using higher prioroty on the logic app.

This is my system:

Made by a group of musician and engineers called AREA 51UK, located in the surroundings of London. Excellent team! You can reach them here: http://www.area51uk.com Wide range of custom built music PC systems and Laptops designed for Recording Studios. Designed by musicians for musicians.

Name of the system: Area 51UK S4 Pro Tower.

CASE: A especially Midi tower shielded case for Pulsar, no noises at all.

CPU: P III 550 (which is still not too bad)

M. BOARD: Intel 440BX AGPset

HDs: 2X IBM 13 Gig EDI - UDMA (extremely reliable drives, 5 years of heavy work already. BTW, I always thought they were 10 Gig each…)
MEMORY: 512 PC100 mixed trademarks (nevertheless, without problems)

GRAPHICS: ATI 32 Meg Rage Fury AGP

NET: DFE-538TX Fast Ethernet (which is not very friendly cos slows down the machine specially when booting)
RECORDER: Yamaha 6416S INT SCSI CDRW + Adaptec 2904 SCSI Kit (fantastic drive, very reliable)

READER: 50X max

CARD: Pulsar I Plus (the fact of being the Plus version avoided me many headaches of possible noises, for a little more)
MONITOR: SONY Triniton Multiscan 210ES. Very pleasant graphics. I can work the whole day and my eyes are practically not tired.

External equipment:

My beloved Bass Washburn Series 1000, 4 strings, an incredible instrument! I tried so many instruments with big names, but… nothing especial happened, with this one things were different. The pickups have been modified and are extremely powerful so I can get the maximum performance with very little power, so less noise when recording.

Yamaha electric guitar RGZ 312, I love this instrument so much! It was difficult to reach what I like. I tried hundreds of guitars too, before buying and nothing would feet my absolute taste, this one stands it and more!

KORG X5 Music Synthesizer AI2 synthesis system variable digital filter multidigital effector 32-voice polyphony keyboard, old, but nice, I still use it and love the Wavetable sounds it has.

MONITORS: SONY SRS-A60 (to reach the needed headroom) YAMAHA YST M-100 (covering the rest of the spectrum, but I miss some more bottom nevertheless) Synthesiser HD 200 headphones (not too bad for monitoring, even if they are not of great precision) SONY CD 250, quite good headphone. I use them when mastering, as a way of contrasting with the HD200 cos they sound quite thinner, in the Sony ones fatter, the level of detail is different in both of them. So you can hear certain things you would not with the other and the other way around.

MIXER: Midiman MultiMixer 10. 10 channel mixer multimedia. (Crappy but very useful almost noiseless 20X10 centimetres, so very small as well)

AMP: Joemeek ProChannel VC3 (wonderful and absolutely irreplaceable, an absolute MUST!)

MICROPHONE: AKG C1000S, absolutely recommended even if already quite old, it does everything and it does it well. It’s still quite cheap too.

CABLES: SOLEX OFC noiseless cord. Recommended!

OS&PROGRAMS: Windows 98SE – Cubase 5.1r – Wavelab 3 – Pulsar 3.1a – All freebies plug-ins for Pulsar offered here in the Z – the wonderful GAM from Celmo, my preferred plug-in ever – Endless VSTi freebies, some very useful and effective, some just to have some fun making useless noises – many VST plug-ins coming from Computer Music magazine – word processor, browser, internet protection, defragmenter.

WHAT MORE: An indescribable need of MAKING MUSIC!!! ALL THE TIME!!!
