That seem indeed pretty amateuristic. I would think Steinberg would ask for a 3.7 dongle back from the shop for every V5update sold?

did i misunderstand? do you need a dongle (the fysical thing you have to plug in some port?) for cubase 5? not on my machine (mac). strange, but then again, my gear comes from the same shop atomic was talkin' about, and i can only come to the same conclusion: not very pro.

whatya say atomic: wanna take over their high tech dept. ?

Well I just wanted to agree with what borg and atomic were saying. The keymusic store hired a couple of amateurs for there so called 'hitech' department.

Maybe we should get a job interview and see what happens ...

Yes you need a (blue) dongle for Cubase 5! Otherwise very strange things are going on with Steinbergs copy protection?? This has nothing to do with the store you bought it in (I think it's safe to assume they didn't, in all their amateurism, rewrite Steinbergs pretection code).
So you are working with a non-cracked Cubase 5 with no dongle? Don't let Steinberg hear it!

where is this dongle supposed to fit in? i'm sure it's not on the outside of my computer.
this is strange, i can't recall reading something about a dongle in the installation guide or manual, nor did cubase ask for it while installing it. (the guys in the music shop did the first install, when i was not around. i've reinstalled it myself a few times afterwards). sure you need one too for mac? maybe it's just for upgrades?

It goes in the printerport, it's a plastic boxy thing thing with "cubase" written on it. This is not just for upgrades. I think Cubase would not start at all without it being present, except if it was cracked. I assume this is for mac as well. There must be cubase users here who can confirm that.

The crack about Cubase is a 'dongle emulator'. Users of cracked Cubase versions don't need a dongle.

Borg, no offence, you know I have faith in you

well, let's get back to the initial subject of this thread after this:

no, cubase 5.1 on mac does NOT need a dongle. bump to http://linux1723.dn.net/forum/Forum1/HTML/005563.html and go to the bottom of that page.
thanks for keeping the faith brother a.

suspect the SX dongle is USB.

I believe I recall seeing a requirement for USB in the SX minimum hardware specs

Nice to see Cubase trying to catch up with Sonar for a change. I'm suprised it wasn't called SV for `Sonarised Version`... but of course Sonar 2 is coming out soon and Cubase will have to start running again ...

The specs on Sonar certainly look good, but isn't there some stability problems with Sonar ?

And AcidPro4 is in the works too

I've tried Sonar, but didn't really like it, particularly it’s virtual instruments sounds neither the interface.

Wow! I'm wandering when are we going to stop it... I'm still learning Cubase 5, it's so huge!!! I've got books and all the staff and now there is SX. Sometimes it seems we get more than what we need, or are capable of using, don’t you think?

Personally, I'm going to wait for a little while and see what is going on with our new version of Cubase and then upgrade. I need to upgrade the OS to Windows XP and then upgrade to SX from VST 5, so it's a lot of money, expensive to me.

Most people must be in the same boat than me, aren't you guys?

totally with you, nestor.

my system runs very smooth now (thanks wojtek  ). and i can keep upgrading software till the end of days. but i can't keep it up. i'm back in the books again, going over modular, sampler, cubase, big matters, small tricks,... so many things to learn. the only thing i want to change regarding my computer in the near future is DSP power, new harddisk (but that's gonna cost, and i'm in the same rubber boat as nestor, i'm afraid) and pulsar v3.1
i want my mac to be my main instrument, not an ever changing ungraspable piece of junk. you don't buy a new neck for your guitar every year, do you? may be once in a life time a better pick up... i feel i'm getting close to my G3's limits with my more recent (larger) projects. so upgrading, to me, looks like buying a new computer (PC?) but i think i'm gonna wait a couple of years

Hmm,

I'm liking what I see in SX except for the Windows XP thing. I'm not sure that I like Windows XP because of My whole Creamware thing. I don't want to connect to the internet with my music computer and I don't even have a network card installed.

This could get messy.

I was unaware of not having to have the internet. Thanks. I read up some more. It looks like the surround sound mixing is going to be great and they decided to do OSX. This is promising. I don't know about the upgrade though...

Windows XP $199
Cubase SX $199

$400 could get me a week-end away with the wife.

Tough choice.

I think he's using 98lite.
Which if like me you think that integrating internet explorer into windows was the worst thing microsoft ever did; In terms of stability and speed.
Thats probably why he doesn't want to change!
Unfotunately until winxp lite comes along (might not happen) we are stuck with it.

incidently Winxp sp1 is supposed to have an option to remove Iexplore, based on DOJ rulings. Somehow doubt it removes the integration though.
