No- I agree - its not clear.
But to me it also muddies the water over the notion that turning off Aero on Win7 - (in a scenario where you have a GPU with at least 1GB RAM) will give your DAW back more cycles.
My 1GB card is probably borderline - but seems little doubt that the one I had to retire coz of the fan would have done the job of handling Aero in W7 - and that was only $120 bucks or thereabouts !

you want to use it, use it. if your computer runs better either way, run that way. it's not that controversial.

For me it's annoying but I want the same Cubase on both computers. The best thing about Cubase 8 after all of their bragging, is that it handles audio better. This is a meat and potatoes upgrade. The bounce in place is also meaningful for most people. VCA faders is really nice for some but I don't do such complicated mixing currently and the new multiband effects. Revelation reverb introduced in Cubase 7.5 blows away any reverb they had before by a long shot. It is the first Cubase reverb I like.

What do you mean 'handles audio better' - in what respect ?
Render in place and VCA faders are of no use to me.

It is less likely to have audio glitches when pushing your system to the limits. This is especially important on weaker computers or large projects.

dante wrote:On the flip side, if you have a good graphics card that eats Aero for breakfast, you could be saving CPU by using Aero - which means more power for the DAW - any DAW, Cubase, Logic or Reaper.
But we DAW users always looked for small and silent (passive) graphic cards at a small form factor (single slot) while the big graphic cards are not only expensive but also use 2 breakout slots, make adjacent PCI/PCIe slots unusable, produce heat, have noisy and after some time failing fans and have high power consumption.
I have no intention to buy big graphic cards for DAW which is 2D only.
In fact I hoped making graphic cards obsolete because there are GPUs in the processors now.
I followed the link and read the thread,- even more confusing to me.
Is it only w/ Win7 and AERO,- or ...
when I´ m using XP and use classic desktop design,- is it calculated on CPU too or on the processor of the graphics card?
And when I use Win7 (or Win8) and I have a graphics card built in (or a GPU in the processor), you say, when using classic desktop design, THAT uses the CPU and not the GPU in the processor or the processor of the graphics card ?
If that is really true, for me it is one more reason to stay w/ XP as long as I can.
That would be until SCOPE 6 is out ...

In a general way, in my humble opinion, most modern musicians tend to install much more software than what they will ever really need or use in their DAW. Many electronic musicians will have hundreds of synthesizers, several hundred VST plugins or even more than a thousand, several alternative software for common tasks, several sequencers, several audio editors etc., etc., etc. They get into a frenzy of gluttony for the new, and the important thing is not music, but the sensation of trying something different.
For sure, as a matter of equilibrium in human nature, it is interesting to see over and over again, that if someone has too much of everything, he either, does not produce at all new songs, or it produces just a few songs per year. In the other hand, most professionals tend to chose one single thing for everything (what they consider to be the best, regardless), and go light and simple with their DAW, producing songs and masters all the time.
There is certainly something to be learned from all this contrast.

The way I understand it - if youre running Win7 AERO it uses GPU if it can. If you're not running Aero on Win7 then that uses more CPU than if you run Aero with a video card that is capable of doing it (more than 1GB and fast enough).
Seems this is not the case in Win8 because Win8 doesnt have Aero as such - just Metro.

I thought that was what 'AsioGuard' was for in Cubase 7. Well, if they've made it even better - makes sense.

no, there are elements that are the framework of the windows. these are handled by the CPU. then there are elements involving the special effects for the windows(like see-through frames and animation) which CAN be handled by the GPU.
why i would want ANY of that nonsense running on a machine that is supposed to be dedicated to audio, i'll never know, but others have other agendas and priorities. the whole story is a circle-jerk, at least in it's telling by m$, but again, the bottom line is whatever works, works. it's not like there's a penalty either way, again assuming everything works fine.

Well stated Nestor! I agree. This particular era of music makes people more vulnerable to this (addiction?).

There is a lot of software and hardware I regret buying but a powerful computer is not a regret at all. The card does have a fan but I have it in the closet and that lowers the noise considerably. I record audio in the bathroom with baffles.

Yes it's that time of year. Magix just released Samplitude ProX 2.

Does Cubase 8 have an ASIOGuard switch ?

Found it :

Apparantly ASIOGuard has been enhanced to also include multitimbral VST instruments on playback- Im thinking Kontakt, EZDrummer etc.
ASIOGuard has been my friend so far - so, the upgrade cost might include that performance benefit depending on VST usage.
And some +ve feedback @ gearslutz

not really about Cubase 8 itself, but I just got myself NI's DrumLab als plugin for Contact Player.
Runs perfectly here in Cubase (Artist) 8
F*cking great tool by the way, if you need real recorded drum sounds for home recorded files without real drums.
But you can dial in a second 'electronic' layer.
Great drum sounds which you can edit and safe, easy and fast, the usual midi parts to edit, with a lot of different types of recording methods (mike distance, chose-ableble overhead, fx-es, output routing if needed, etc.
99 euros...

I hope more kits will come available...

And it is evident "AERO" and "Metro" aren´t just only different names and behave significantly different instead ?

Nah - aero is about glassy effects, metro is more like large square icons - looks like the UI on an Xbox 360 ... And could be a step to unifying UI across all Windows devices when Win 10 comes out.
Aero is not a good candidate for an 'all devices' strategy - eg its a battery flattener.

They are bringing it back but I am sure not as the default GUI. Some people want it I guess. I think it is horrible.

I got Cubase 8 from Santa - it made me select another AsioGuard setting, but I haven't pushed it to its limits yet to see if its any better.
