Violin lessons, orchestras, trumpet lessons, 4 part madrigal group, military brass band and vocal soloist in Godspell during high school for half a decade, then self taught piano, guitar & bass in a couple of garage bands is enuff real stuff for me, bring on the high tech cut and pastey Scope & VST virtual land ('no daily boring scales practise or band ego clashes required') now I say - VST's obey and dont argue back

Forget all said!
Yesterday I had to mix the Recycle Orchestra from Paraguay. All instruments were made out of junk. The violins sounded awesome, so did the flute (and everything else was real good too).
And for youngsters they played remarkably well (bach, beethoven, bossa nova, henry mancini,...). They didn't really have the volume (hence the micing), but hey. (I wonder were they got their bows from, they looked pretty real, and if so, cost quite a bit as well...)
Ken, how happy have your linux endevours been while actually making music? Pretty frustrating, not? If that's your thing, the tinkering, all the fun to you. But yes, lots of good freebies and Reaper for the masses that can't/won't spend...
As some one said 'happy musicmaking' to you all, whichever tool we choose!

That's exactly what I mean, democratizing and releasing everything out in the wild for self governance seems to end up with a bunch of crap. So while accessibility for all is one thing (good thing), the right to sway the course of development I think is best kept in the hands of those that are capable, or more importantly, committed to seeing it through.

NI stuff is nice and the samples are useful and very good for beginners (I started 14 years with the reaktor) but it's not comparable to the professional SC and Zarg dsp plugins.

I have Komplete 9. It's overwhelming how much you get. Mainly I just use the Solid Dynamics and Solid Bus Comp compressors though

. Having said that, it is an important feature to me. I have tried Cubase compressors and SC but they are not as good as Solid and I was never happy with any software compression until Solid. It doesn't look like much new in Komplete 10 over Komplete 9. Version 9 might be my last as my upgrade cost will increase. I have to get every version of Cubase.

No and honestly I have not tried a lot of compressors. I am happy with Solid though so won't be shopping for one soon probably with everything else on the list. Using VSL MIR Pro 24 reverb with MIRacle and a small stone room IR (actually this is many IR samples). Love with this combo for now.
