really? I thought pianoteq was too.. uh.. well, I won't use the word "warm", but I think it sounds too muffled, as if the hammer's felt was super soft. I do like qlpiano's hardness, like the hammers have more of a bite. Especially on the yamaha if I remember their demos correctly. pianoteq does have a tendency to be bland in that respect.

That's the thing, it's one thing to have a "perfect" set of hammers. Pteq's hammers are probably all voiced the same, depending on your hammer hardness setting. But in reality, hammers are voiced individually (by range) and they are not uniform accross the board. So these sort of things throw off the sound a bit. (which may be solved in pianoteq pro)

Anyway, bottom line, I'd love to not have to worry about these things.. Just like piano owners don't necessarily have to be a piano technician in order to own and operate one. It's just such a drag, when all I want is to load in a piano sound and get on with the tune.

I don't think it's wrong to be skeptical.. it's true that pianoteq's sound was horrible for a very long time. I think pianoteq 2.5's sound is still horrible. I made some tweaks, and made my own preset which is bearable to play, but it's no where near being a "beautiful" sound.. Their new yamaha c5 add on sounds pretty good.. But that's wthere it's at. It's an okay, very believable piano to play, it's just not a particularly good piano. The cool thing though, is that they are getting closer to a good sound with each update. More so with the recent updates than before.. So I'm even more optimistic with their direction.

The demo is for version 3 and it is better than 2.5. I agree it is getting better. A lot of pianos are believable if you don't hear it side by side with a better sounding one. I'll probably get Pianoteq in a couple years if they keep improving as they have. I wonder if it will hit a ceiling. It's possible that it doesn't have to sound exactly like any piano to still be a good piano.

can't argue with that.
