Thanks everyone. Recording the monitor with a microphone didn't help at all but it's nice to know the microphone, pre and monitor don't color the sound much. I'm going to try a little EQ and then if that doesn't work give up.
Update: That didn't work. At least the EQ makes it sound less muffled. I will just not worry about it until someone else complains.
