Hi Astroman,
in the press-reviews on the brainworx site you find some informations about the EQs and how they were implemented.

I thought "oho" ;) when I read that softtube builds the protools version. Think of their great amp-simulations: That's a name for highest quality.
Scope version is said to be build with SDK if I understood correctly. Quickly reading I couldn't find hints on how the vst version was build, but BX = BX seems not to be the case. As I understood different EQs were used. A comparison between the different versions with 1/1 settings on the brainworx site would be interesting as I expect them to sound different but maybe I got it wrong.

Anyway "my" "problem" is, that I once again see how important a professional recording surrounding with decent microphones, preamps & co. is, as it makes the basic sound which you work with & congratulation to brainworx, they really got it :) Nice drum-recording-demo!

B.t.w. there's much reason to be happy that brainworx still stays with scope. I just looked on the softube-site and found no information about their amps for scope anymore (EDIT: Finally found it, but it's more on the history page... I still hope that there will com new things...maybe someday with a new scope? That would for itself be a reason to buy it.). They sell TDM now (649 €).
Seems as if digidesign lets develope the best things on scope & then port it to their own platform... but we have the "originals". Maybe we'll soon see other scope-developed-products as TDM-versions for 649€:
So although this is a bit off-topic in this thread (so just relate this tip to the brainworx products as well if you want) buy these f****** great amp simulations as long/as soon as you can. For 200€ they're just ridiculously cheap & we have them latency-free!!

garyb wrote:yes, that's correct.
when you do this, the middle data is phase cancelled on the figure 8 mic, leaving a track with the middle data and a stereo track with side data......
The M minus S (let's say it's the left channel) data will have the frequencies that are common to the side and mid cancel each other out, due to the phase flipping on this combination's side channel.

The M plus S channel (right) will have the data that is common to both channels re-enforced.

The mid data does not disappear as such.

I know I am splitting hairs.

I am also pissed off that I can no longer access the EM article, all of a sudden it wants "subscription info", bastards! Used to be free for the taking.

no problem, nprime.
there's nothing wrong with more detailed/accurate info.

What we have is one track that is the M mic which is panned dead center.

On another track is the S mic which is a figure eight mic.

To achieve the M/S image, we copy and paste the S signal so that it is now on 2 tracks, and then invert the phase on the left track's channel. Now pan them hard left and right. What this results in is a right channel which contains the M+S signal, and the left channel contains the M-S signal.
i want to make sure that im on the right track to record stereo vocals 
first I place my akg c414b-uls like () figure8 and on top of that I put my akg c3000B like ^ cardioid. than cardioid mic goes to L ch of BX and Figure8 to R.

Is this all? is nprime is telling to record in 3 tracks?
thanks

I am not familiar with the BX.

You record each mic to a separate channel...so you only have to record 2 channels.

After recording, copy the figure eight mic's track to another channel, then flip the phase on that channel. Now pan the 2 figure eight channels hard left and right, while leaving the cardioid channel in the center. You now have decoded the M/S signal: the cardioid mic is the center and the 2 channels or the figure eight are the side channels. Play with EQ, FX, and the panning to taste.

The BX unit may do all this for you, I don't know.

hello firubbi,

I have been very busy so I have mainly used the BX as mastering EQ by now and I love it (soft and transparent). I have not purchased the mics I would need for M/S. I have done juste one session with a friend who was used to this technics ; he was very happy withthe plugins. Sorry I won't be able to give you more help... by now ! :D

I do not have this device form Dirk, but always was interested in it's conception and uses.

Nobody knows this better than Dirk, the creator.

You have me confused with someone smart.

thanks jimmy. just got a mail from dirk. its simple just connect a cardioid mic to L of Bx and a figure8 to R of bx. thats it... bx does the rest :)

btw dirk is working with multiband compressor/limiter :)
