I think Chris had a good idea, with a valuable ratio.
The relative private character of Planetz makes a difference and is absolute an advantage
We only have aprox. 5 (to say a number) music tracks actual a week. How about to keep the upload function but restrict them to a total of lets say 20 tracks. When a new track is posted the last one falls out of the list and will be erased.
I hope it is possible to automate this function somehow.
I came to the idea, because somebody can be detained to upload his track to such a free service.

I agree. Chris's idea is excellent, although it could maybe be a little bigger. 50 tracks @ 10Mb would only be 500Mb & a new ten meg limit would allow for 'higher quality' mp3 encoding, which would be nice.

Ok, interesting proposal.
Curious how this should work.
- When you post in the music forum, you can either post a link to a song, or you can upload your song.
- if it's a link, the thread can stay forever.
- if it's an upload, then it will be expected to "retire" after some limit is reached.
When it retires, should we just delete the song off the server, and leave the thread to allow discussion to continue, (and potentially allow the person to re-upload it, or modify it to a link)? Or should we delete the entire thread, with all its text comments?
I prefer the former (leave the thread there, and just delete the mp3). In general I really don't like deleting text from the forum, because it messes with our history, and it's complicated from the code and database management side. OTOH, a big thread about a song which you can't hear anymore also seems not so great.
What do you guys think?

Sounds great. Perhaps a note to the thread saying the song is deleted would be appropriate, although a lot of work.

I don't see why we would need an ability to upload songs on p-z at all.
It would later have to be replaced with a link anyhow, if the person responsible for the thread wishes to update.
No file or link just devalidates a thread, imo.

That's best of both worlds, I'd say.
If there's any reason for a reload, the possibilty is there

Hope you get it sorted John, best luck

Just wondering if some contributions would help ease the current server situation John?
How do things stand at the moment, are you managing OK or would you appreciate some financial input to help maintain PZ?

Thanks for bringing this up Royston.
I don't think the ISP was demanding more money. We were just using more than our "fair share". I think the proposals for rotating out the old mp3's will help a lot.
Of course, donations are always appreciated, but we're doing ok

There's still some discounted creamware devices available, as Cory just pointed out over here:

I think that we are going to get more and more music in the following two years, always increasing in number no matter how careful we may intend to be. This is quite logical as the number of people getting into the net is growing all the time: uploads, downloads, and much surfing are assured for us, here in the Z.
By all means, the music forum IS going to become bigger. Whatever solution we may point at to tackle the extra load, will in the long run be short, if this extra load is located within Planet Z server.
I don’t like the idea of going outside Planet Z to post, not even like the idea of watching a different interface than ours, but despite all this, I think the best is start looking for an external Z server solution.
I vote for a solution that may allow us to upload mp3 as always, but not in planet Z server but somewhere else, but linking the song to the Music Forum as an ordinary post, kipping there all our reviews and follow up in plain text. I see this as the only way to assure this problem will disappear for good, otherwise you will have to come back over and over again searching for solutions John.
This could be too, a solution, please have a look at it and give your opinions:

I don’t understand why those guys do this, I don’t understand the advantage of getting so much space for free to everybody, but here you have, up to 60 MB per file, no limit in how many files you upload.
Just an idea

Ok, for a start, I've removed all songs uploaded to planetz.com before august 2005... That's like 4gb right there
If you click on a song link, it'll take you to a page that says the file is expired and removed, and the onwer can re-upload, or post a link...
Cheers,

It's a great idea! My suggestion is to remove a song after one month. I was always afraid of posting whole songs in the net. It's due to the fact of music sharing. If for example somebody likes Hubird's Genuanh - I'm a big fan of it - may also want to find his other works. And because we sometimes share our songs in development this could lead to d/l beta versions by somebody's songs (igoogle search). I hope you know what I mean. Me for example I changed most of my music forum threads to just 'my song' or 'this song' without titles and the name of my band to unable google to find them. If I post my songs or beta versions here in PlanetZ I want you to comment it and nobody random.

Guys,
I'm not sure if you noticed (or didn't notice), but the server downtime never happened!

They decided to wait a month. I'll post again when I hear back from them.

I noticed it

I also noticed the lacking of the planetz icon picture upper left for some days now...thought it had to do with the server reorganisation activities, but at my work everything looks normal, so it must be caused by some obscure IE moods...?

I don't think people are listening to the old music. You might as well delete all music and threads in the music section after 6 months as far as I'm concerned. I like posting here because there is no spyware.

Maybe require a username and password to download them?
