It's a shame these things need to turn into some kind of war.

I'm in a unique position of not having committed financially towards a Neuron but still having access to using it, therefore perhaps being able to have an objective view on it. My conclusion after playing with it some more? The sound quality just doesn't warrant me spending any more time with it... I don't see the point of 'worthy technological advances' if it doesn't sound very inspiring. I get more inspiration out of a battered old Juno106 than the Neuron.

I'm no longer looking for anyone to convince me... if you like your Neuron, great... consider it your secret weapon or something which is just too advanced for us mere mortals I guess I'll keep saving for my Kyma

No I was talking about sound quality. There's certain instruments which beg you to use them because they sound so damn good.. a Kyma, Eventide FX box, a fat analog synth like an SE1 or a Prophet 5 etc. It's got nothing to do with the type of music...

(Valis - yep the Doppelmangler seemed pretty damn good when I tried the demo.. might have to pick it up one of these days)

BTW Stardust - out of those instruments I listed, I only have an SE1... I have played with the others though and wish I had them (although we do have the Eventide TDM effects in the PT rig).

Just a shot in the dark guys, but do you not think Hartman would've gone for fanless mini ITX running embedded OS with a custom built PCI card

Mini ITX mainboards are selling for around $150-$200 which means they can be custom built in bulk for <$100 each.

A nice custom PCI card with quality convertors & all communication interfaces (internal serial etc)for the synth would also cost <$100 each.

Though obviously not the only PCBs in the Neuron, my guess would be that 2 such PCBs are the heart of it... come on guys open 'em up

the loud fan of the machine was a common complaint in reviews
aside from that Mini ITX are 'affordable' only recently, still no cheapo with a Pentium M.
The VIAs were at best 500MHZ and even more 'powerless' (than today) at the design time of the Neuron.
