Hello pz , long time i haven't been there
I was in Madras 26th december , a small earthquake hit the city around 6a.m , i go back to sleep and take the road to pondicherry at 10.00 am , at that moment i have not realise that a wave have hit the coast around 8.30 , i saw very nervous villagers sitting on the road and blocking the road 30km south of chennai , a kind of semi riot atmosphere was in the air , No police , no help etc....A kind of big migration start on the road , i decide to came back toward chennai.I stop in a devastated village near chennai , lot of people on the coast with red flags making signs to fishermen who have survive , few boats have escape the wave , they were far from the coast and maybe the wave was not so big at this distance , but they can not came back probably because of very strong stream and back flow of the tsunami.
Back in chennai i try to go toward Marina beach , the biggest beach of chennai where usually you can find at sunday evening maybe 100000 people with families playing , praying etc...maybe hopefully the wave arrive at morning with less people.
Officially they say that there is only 300 people dead on this beach , but i have a serious doubt on the information given by indian authorities.All area have been closed by police , so i came back home , not moving anymore.
What is sure is that all that was less than 100m from the sea is destroyed , atomised.
Lot of poor fishermen are living less than 100m of the sea.
Now lot of rumors , desinformation , etc...lot of rumors are running through the tamil nadu ...panic is still in the air .
In village where i go usually during week end , Mamalipuram wich is a kind of small turistic city , it seems that there is no so much dead people . Fishermens have feel something and have evacuate the coast at time ...maybe the knowledge and experience of the ocean have talk at this moment .
I was swimming there 6 hours before the tsunami and the ocean was already strange , streams very different of the usual flow , it was just a feeling . (maybe only because of the full moon ), so hopefully i decide to go back in chennai around 2.00 am , good for me

This is sad, few days before the disaster happened we left Langkawi/Malaysia, we had beach parties, met new and old friends and had a nice time.
We can´t etablish a conntact to Langkawi yet so we don´t know what happend there, if something happened there.

It´s really terrible to have all this nice memories of my nice holiday on Langkawi in my head and now, maybe all is destroied there.

Every 30minutes the number of death people raises, terrible.

That`s a beginning.

On a slightly different note. In Indonesia in Aceh Province the devastation was even greater than in the rest of Asia combined so far at least 80,000 are dead and just about half an entire island is completely gone. I am not saying that the situation isn't desperate elsewhere. In fact I think everyone there needs all the help the can get over there.

but to get an Idea of the devastation's scope I thought it would be best to turn to satellite imagery. I managed to obtain, 2 satellite images of Banda Aceh's Harbor area (1 before, and 1 after) and then I created a couple of Hi-Res composites that in my humble opinion even more clearly depict the extreme level of devastation.
