"splitting hairs" as they say (well, as they here anyway).
We say here - splitting a hair into 4 pieces
As for your explanation - I wanted to say the same but I failed thinkong of translating it all into English
From the rational point of view. But in my heart I fell the same as Huub. Strange but true

That's just the natural background level of "first world" guilt isn't it ?

Looks like only a very small part of that world feels guilty.
Kettle and poultry are kept under miserable conditions and large scale fleets exploit the seas for only the purpose those habitants can spare a few bucks.
At the same moment they 'eat' 3 times more than would be good for their health, creating unbelievable follow up costs.
There are complaints (and large press) about a few drug addicts, while millions of regular folks are kept on cardiac medication perfectly legal.
There's no need at all for 100 PS and above powered cars, yet everyone is after such a thing.
A temperature regulation inside a car costs an up to 15% increase of gas - noone cares, it's about personal convenience.
No, I wouldn't bother at all about scientific expenses as long as that kind of 'common sense' rules
Careful dealing with the items above would certainly generate enough economical power that noone on this planet would starve or remain without health care - and military expenses haven't even been mentioned.
cheers, Tom
