"Survival of the fittest" is an incorrect (or just incomplete) statement, and almost a tautology (self-referential). You could say "survival of the fittest is just natural selection" and be closer to the historical truth, but still far from a proper scientific statement. Natural Selection as a theory encompasses more than just "survival of the fittest", the latter was just a shorthand metaphor that became used for the sake of convenience (which perhaps eclipsed the other aspects of Natural Selection that are inconvenient when using Survival of the Fittest in a discussion or argument).

The actual 'coining' of the term "survival of the fittest" was NOT by Darwin himself, rather it was by Herbert Spencer after reading Darwin's On the Origin of Species. Darwin is commonly known for the term (it is attributed to him in 'common lore') but in fact did not even use the term until his 5th publishing of Origin of the Species, and in that case he merely used it as a metaphor rather than a scientific hypothesis. Spencer was also the one who expanded the use of the term far beyond heritable characteristics aka. Natural Selection of heritable characteristics which convey a survival advantage (which is what Darwin was actually stating iirc). Both statements (natural selection and the "survival of the fittest" metaphor) are products of Victorian-era English reductionist sciences.

What is interesting is that while Darwin's upbringing in an affluent Christian environment (he actually spent several years at Cambridge University in training to be a minister of religion) is seen as a hindrance to this idea (it runs counter to the christian morals & ideas of a merciful/compassionate God), Darwin is revered for being curious and speculative enough as to arrive at his theory on the Origin of Species, which was in contrast to 'common sense' at the time. Also interesting is that Herbert Spencer was NOT brought up in an environment that made him supportive of the Victorian society of his day. In fact he was quite at odds with religion, imperialism and milatirism throughout his life, even if he did gain notoriety as a philosopher during his successful years.

Natural Selection (as reduced to "survival of the fittest") gained its 'common knowledge' ideas as it was distilled into the mainstream via Spencer's writings, though it was his application of this specific hypothesis/theory (which was specific to biology) to a wide array of topics (especially economic & sociological/political) that is of course the cause for popularizing the idea. Now as to whether the 'ruling elite' and affluent society was influenced by this term or merely adopted the term as a convenience because it fit many uses to which is was being put, that's a deeper argument (and what GaryB alludes to).

anyway, THERE IS NO NEED TO KILL PEOPLE TO "SAVE" THE EARTH!
You are about to confuse the issue. Survival of the fittest doen`t mean survival of the strongest. Those who fit best in all cases will survive. Even the human procreation is build on that. You managed to be born that means you are one of millions and those other sperms died. If there was no need to kill the others, why did it happen then?

The syntax of the word 'survival' even comes into question as to whether or not it is even the correct terminology.

Yes, all the redundant debate over God vs. evolution, or whatever, is moot if one thinks they believe that God invented evolution as the firmware of sorts for life on this planet. Therefore both sides are moot. So, while both supposed sides of the debate tug at our political infrastructure (and financing our education systems to conveniently brainwash us into confining our minds into one or the other little box of beliefs), we're sitting here trying to quantify what survival really means. It's an endless loop we shouldn't even bother getting sucked into.

You're the sperm that made it because you're the sperm that made it - not that it was the 'fittest'.

This is why that phrase is considered (or at least debated to be) a tautology. Saying 'the fittest' is not sufficient for a scientific statement.

Wow......You guys just gave me an idea....

See all of this cackling is a great way to get the old Brain working.
Nothing better than a good debate.
While you guys are yapping science, it got me thinking about how I am still a Giant sperm thingy. Everytime I see a really pretty girl, nature or God who knows, makes me feverish.
I can't help myself I love women...
However I hate singers, and since I am looking at putting another group together, with no women, just men........I have a great idea.

Ladies % Gentlemen........We Bring You The Spirochetes............ANKYU.........
Perfect just like the old days, a band full of horny bastards all feverish to chase around trim on the breaks....

Thank You.......

I just need a neat Logo for the Marquis.

The virus is unfortunately mutating and spreading pretty badly.
Here we have an important duplication of it...
In the followng weeks we will see it becoming a serious thread all over...

I better not drive in my car anymore, 'cause lots of people die in car accidents everyday.
More people have died from the regular flu anyways.

Just stay healthy, and do NOT take the vaccines.

The regular flu and auto accidents are an acceptable way to die. We could easily prevent most auto accidents with collision detection and wireless networking with GPS. Instead of accepting auto accidents, we ought to be mandating new technology. It will come eventually but we could speed up the process by 100 years by using government regulations. People are such babies though, and they won't want to pay a few hundred extra but they are willing to pay for the war on terrorism. It just doesn't make any sense.
