Hi,
It's all done, and working

. I have HDD 1, 'C', with original XP pro, no partitions on this disk. Then I have HDD 2 with partitions so:-
'D'= XP pro 2, all audio programs (this turned out to be the boot disk)
'E' remains Virtual RAM
'F' storage area for all audio files.
How does this sound to you? Only one minor prob, that is my home network only works through XP 2. I'll work on this, but for now all is well.

It seems I spoke too soon. All IS well except that I cannot install the STW pack for SFP. When I drag and drop a STW dev into the routing window the program freezes even before entering the key number.

hey richmo,

Go for the OS on 2nd partition as normal, general OS if space is not hindering you. The whole point is to run OS and audio partitions on a different physical drive. They will both be accessed at the same time. If they're at the same physical drive, it will have a hard time.

Only problem here is that the first OS is now running in PIO and not DMA mode. Not sure why. Otherwise it means starting all over. Do you know how to change from PIO to DMA. I have already selected DMA if available.

A funny thing, I just installed Intel app accelorater which brought up my 2nd HDD as new hardware which then self installed. Now the Intel app acc program tells me that both HDDs are running in UDMA. Does this mean that it is OK to use the 1st HDD ('C')as my audio OS and record to a partition on the 2nd HDD? (It was really slow when it was PIO mode.) In which case I can transfer all my office stuff to the partition on the 2nd HDD with the 2nd OS leaving 'C' free for audio software only. Sort of reverse to how I explained it before except now I'll be recording to a different physical drive.
Sorry to be a pain in arse, thanks again for all your help.

Yes, for the sake of multi tracking, put audio OS on c: instead of on the same drive as you'll record to/play from...

One very last question, in startup and recovery options, my audio OS is not the default (it is the system OS not the boot OS). Should it be the default?

Doesn't matter at all which comes first, it's the one selected that counts.

There's 3 ways to edit the boot order:
1) System Properties, 'Advanced' tab page, Startup & Recovery Settings
2) msconfig
3) or directly from primary boot disk, and edit boot.ini. This is where you can rename the boots: the name is between " ", give it any name you want.

Hi atOmic, you've been great! And I hope any other technical newbies will find this post helpful.
All I want to do now is boot from the XP CD and reinstall to 'C' so that it is totally clean. Even though I ran reg cleaners etc there's still a lot of registry items that are confusing the smooth running of the audio OS. On retrospect I would have done a clean install before any of this. So, is it safe to do this without ruining all my efforts?
Also you mentioned something about sharing stuff/files between the two OSs. If you have some spare time it might be interesting.

Yes, it's oki to boot from cd, format c: and re-install XP to it. If you feel unsure, backup your boot.ini to another drive so it can be restored later.

To share files:

--> SFP files: Close SFP. Then in cset.ini of one of the SFP installs, edit the paths in[ReferenceResolver], [StaticPath], [Path] and [Favorites]. You can route them to the same folder on the other drive, ie. I changed all "c:SFP..." by "d:SFP..."

--> My Documents can easily be set to the same folder, right click on My Documents -> Properties -> show it where it's at!

--> Internet Explorer can have same Temporary Internet Files folder, although I don't know if the files really will be shared. I made the folder on my documents drive.

--> Outlook (Express) can be pointed to same archives. In Outlook (i hope i translate right from dutch), it's Tools -> E-mail settings -> Data files. I made a 'Mail' folder on the documents drive and routed both Outlook to the same archives. OE has something similar.

--> I set all programs to store their logs in a Logs folder on that documents drive -how could you guess

--> I told both OS's to put the swapfile on the same partition: Win-key + Pause -> Advanced -> Performance Settings -> Advanced -> Virtual Memory -> Change.

--> If you made a lean desktop theme, save it and import it in the other OS, that'll save you some time too.

--> ...
