line6 variax
Not directly but I am running sound for a local band and their guitarist is using a Variax into another Line6 combo amp.
The guitar seems well-made. And it's pretty amazing what you can dial up with the thing. Very believable simulations of famous guitars. This works out great for this particular band because in addition to their own originals, they do some very accurate covers. The Variax allows the guitarist to instantly switch from say, a Les Paul sound to a Strat or 12 string Rick sound. Very cool!
I'm not sure how it equates as a recording device but I've been using Line6 products on many sessions and I think they all produce top-notch sounds.
Those of you who are old-school "Les Paul into a Marshall stack" might shy away from such a thing but any musical instrument has a time and place. The Variax seems perfectly suited to songs that require a lot of tone switching - such as what you'd find in a cover band. For the corner bar, leave the $3000 Les Paul at home and bring this instead. The drunk at the end of the bar will never know the difference
