I know there are many, many webs sites in the Net to read about this, actually, this is what I’m doing. But the information is soooo much that I get lost… I don’t expect a full explanation, just a very short one, to get started in the right place.

All I would like to know, is what do you use to reach this goal:

Is it done with your own program?

Is it done through the Sever?

How?

Cheers  for your help...

I'm no specialist on network stuff, but here's how it goes for me.

My friend and his research group has rented a server.

He made me an acccount.

There's a default directory in there named /public_html

Whatever I put in public_html, everyone on the net can see when they access http://www.iface.ne.jp/~ken/

If I put an index.html into public_html, then walla, http://www.iface.ne.jp/~ken/ now becomes a website.

There are many other ways than renting an actual server. (which is expensive) There are places like geocities or whatever else that offer very little amount of server space for free. With the only drawback of having to use their banners and also sluggish performance.

What sort of website are you planning to build anyway? A big one? Small one? Personal one?

Thanks Ken for your anwer.

In fact, I’m working my way through to becoming a multimedia developer.

It is curious how things work… from the day I sow the video from the ATI company, posted by John Cooper in this very Off Topic Forum, I seriously started thinking becoming a multimedia builder. I love it. Of course, music will always be my principal occupation and concern anyway.

My girlfriend and I are both studying this matters. We just wanted to know how you upload a page. We already have build some little pages from some tutorials and the so, and we want to try out how to upload it. That’s it.

My personal page has to be quite heavy, cos I’m going to upload lots of music into it. This is a more clear idea, so you understand.

Cheers

once you get the webspace, you'll need something like 'fetch', a simple freeware program, which sort of brings the architecture of your website to your computer, so you can 'manage' the site and its content (the pages you made with ie dreamweaver).

I use a program called CuteFTP to upload my website files. Highly recommended but I'm sure everyone has their own personal favorite.

I use Frontpage to generate/develop the webpages. Probably not the best editor but not the worst either.

As far as a host service is concerned, I've been very happy with http://www.abac.com - they have excellent, cost effective service.

Maybe this is too basic, but here it is anyway:

1) You need space on a server to upload to. Often with ISPs they give you some "free" space. I wouldn't use this unless it is just for testing. If you build your website here it will mean that you are forever tied to your ISP. Instead get a dedicated host. Server space is cheap. here's some good hosts:
http://www.3-95.com
http://www.myacen.com

2) But before you sign up for hosting you will need a domain. Here is a good domain name checker:
http://www.nameboy.com/
Don't buy your domain from here, just see if it's available.

3) When you sign up for hosting also get your domain through the same company. It's cheaper and easier that way.

4) A week or so after you sign up you will be notified that everything is ready. They will send you an email with instructions about how to upload. It will simply include info on what settings to be into popular apps like Dreamweaver or Frontpage. Just fill in the space - it's really very easy.

5) With Dreamweaver you can upload your pages from there - again it is VERY easy. here is what I do:
- Open Dreamweaver (it opens my offline "master" of my site by default)
- Click "connect" (Dreamweaver looks for my host)
- A light flixks on to show I am connected to my site
- I click on the pages I want to upload from my pages list
- I click "put" and the pages upload
- The pages transfer and you can see them immediately in a browser.

The beauty of Dreamweaver (I know I always push this app) is that it's specifically designed to handle the design, organisation and uploading of a site.

Programs like CuteFTP are excellent for uploading but it means you will be designing in one app and uploading in another. That makes things more complex in my opinion.

With this whole field I believe very strongly that if you try to do it too cheaply you will make things painful.

While you can probably use freeware apps to optimise pics and create grahpics, you should have a good app to handle site management and upload. For me, that's Dreamweaver. Version 3 has everything you need and you should be able to pick up a copy very cheaply if you look around. Later versions (Dreamweaver 4 and MX) add lots of features of course but for now you don't need them.

Cheers,
S

Thanks guys, this is getting clearer for me.

I see there are quite a few of you already into it out there.

I think Dreamweaver will be my choice in the future, yes. I’ve tried FrontPage just to compare, well… Dreamweaver is far more efficient but much more difficult to handle as well. I’m just beginning my trial…

I’m glad to know the process of uploading a web page it’s not difficult. I’m going to start doing some experiences with some free space before going into the real thing, so to burn there my first steps. Nevertheless, I will do something useful.

I’m going to check and understand all you have said here.

Thanks very much for your help to you all.

I've used Frontpage for many years and many websites. I currently have space on PowWeb, and for $7.77 a month I never have any problems. I like to change the website (which has two links to my MP3 musicsite) often, featuring photography and background music. I attract people with fast internet service. I will be moving from Frontpage to Dremweaver, etc., as soon as I get the time to develop a multi-page site.

Please check my http://yuppiemusic.biz
You'll hear BB King and Deedles do a great tune.

It's fun to have a site that's easy to build and rebuild within minutes....
