hello to everybody, i just formatted and reinstalled win xp in my two pc (one for music and the other for everything else), since i lost my songs HD few weeks ago. i don't think i have to explain what i felt those days, and how afraid i am now, reinstalling everything, of looose data again. so i'm wondering wich is for you the best way to recover the system or data.
norton go back, norton ghost.. and what else..
i also wonder how these utilities can slow the music machine.. do somebody have some experience with this?

None of the above. Burn your files to a CD or a CDRW!!!!!!!!!!!. Reinstalling the OS is not a problem.

For system backup/restore:
Drive Image from PowerQuest

For data backup/restore:
Retrospect 6.0 Pro from Dantz

i use norton ghost. not sure about the version but it's quite old. 2-3yrs old.

i've got an image on cdrw of my c drive with just the XP Pro OS. os tweaked, trimmed back with the minus all the unnecessary driver/inf files, wallpaper, helpfiles, graphics, outlook express, ms msger etc etc. A partition restore only takes like 5mins, and reinstallation of apps & latest drivers takes another 10-15mins. works pretty good and is an absolute time saver, no more of this 3hr long format & os install crap.

all other stuff goes on cdrw.

ghost working a treat here.

As far as backing up music projects though, I backup to a unix server and also burn the files onto CDROM.
