Hi!
I'd like to measure the latency from adat out to adat in connecting external compressors. I like the possibilities of making parallell compression etc. with external equipement. So I have to set latency for the external devices to mix them wet/dry within scope. Very nice things are possible.
But it takes some time to search for right sample delay values...
Wasn't there a tool by tgstgs??
Thanks
Martin

I know the device you are talking about, but can't come up with the right search to find it yet.
You can use the Mixers>Control Room device, and use the test signal to generate a click, send that into an External Mastering Effect device. That has a sample delay built-in for this reason. Connect that to your ADAT, and through your external compressor, and back into ADAT.
Take the output of the Mastering Effect, and send to your speakers.
Switch on Phase Invert, then mix wet & dry 50%, and adjust the delay until the two pulses almost cancel each other out. (since one signal goes through the analog world, it won't stay a nice perfect click, so you won't really null them out.)
You can also use a sine wave/test tone instead of click, and get the signal + phase inverted signal to cancel out as best possible.
If you have the new Analyzer device, this becomes an easy visual process. But your ears are pretty damn good, too

Main problem I had was with External device - devices (which are a really great invention!!!!), where I could not find the right delay in one sweep, because the knob is too unprecise. I build an own, so now I have a Fader which can aim every sample delay in one long sweep. It's great, having those effects with external hardware. Maybe it won't be good in a mix, but so far I like very much what I hear. Tubes & Compression driven through EQs... Guess who cancels out very well: An old behringer composer which can do real wonders on the signal shape that way - can be used as sort of a transient designer!
Thanks!

Can't you click on the delay amount, and then adjust with the keyboard?
Page Up/Dn = 1/128 adjustment of the value
Arrow Right/Left = 1/1280 adjustment
Arrow Up = center
Arrow Down = last value
Return = swap between center and last value
1 = Min value
2 = 11%
3 = 22%
-
9 = 88%
0 = max value
Still, sounds like building your own delay is a good idea, and a good tool to have

Here's the old PlanetZ Latency article, which describes exactly what you're trying to do.
Nowadays there's Adern's Sample Delay (direct link to zip here on Z, original topic is here). This allows sample-accurate delays, which is much more exact than using default milli-second delays. Perfect for this job.
Have fun

Tgstgs device is here:
http://forums.planetz.com/viewtopic.php ... ck#p270549
Will later test, if it does the job.
