Step Sequencer Smoother ?

Post by dawman »

I have never messed w/ a step sequencer b4 and started playing presets in Solaris's sequencer.

I am trying to get the notchy, repetitive sound off, so the sequencer will control the filtering w/o having the notes repeating themselves as in that naucious, gow-gow-gow-gow-gow sound, if that makes any sense.

Sorry if I sound ignorant but I never used one b4, and it seems as though I could control things via the MIDI BPM's and have some real tasty stuff goin' on.

Maybe a link to a manual for the original hardware might be of help also.

I apologise for lack of knowledge, but once I figure it out my experience w/ hardware units should come in handy.

I used phrase sequencing on my ancient MV-30, but this seems so much more fun than just having licks and arrpeggios played back in sync.

Thanks,

Let me see if I get you right.. you want the step sequencer's output to control the value of a filter "knob" instead of triggering a note? Or to trigger a note continuously (like a "goooooooooooooowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww") until you release it, and have another step seq to control the filter for that sound?

Ankyuvarymush.

Yes, I have no need to have the sequencer play 4 me, just act as a 3rd and 4th hand by controlling my filters, or whatever shaper / LFO I need controlled.

This will be synced to BPM's, so even if it is off in the timing a little, it will still get me close to movements I seek w/o having to use my feet and hands so much.

I have created a giant monster via MIDI and I want to have fun again instead of using expression pedals and hands to move sliders and knobs.

The B4000's require it to be an accurate emulation by using the drawbars, but I grow weary of playing w/ one hand just to achieve great synth dynamics.

I was pretty good at doing this with my Oberheims envelopes, but that has definately evolved to much better sounds and control since those days.

Thanks Again.

OK.. I think I got it :D

So you want the sequencer's output to control say a filter, but no note to be played.

From what I could understand, you handle that with the sequencer / env combinations.

you have 3 sequencers and 5 env generators (1-4 + Amp).

In the seq page you have the "gate assign" part where you say which env is controlled by which sequencer.

Say you want to only control the resonance of a HP filter with seq 2 (+/- 127 values) (see the top of page 33 of Solaris' 4.0 manual for the screenshots) , then you have to choose which env to use (making sure it's not used by another module), say env1, and the sequencer to use, say seq B.

you then set env2, env3, env4 and amp to "MIDI", and env1 to "seq B" (see page 53 of Solaris' 4.0 manual for the screenshots).

I can't try it at the mo, but I think it should work :)

Cheers

I'm on it like stink on shit !!

Thanks, I'll let you know what I come up with.

I copied certain sections a few years back and have lost the origiinal file. Luckily a fellow Solarian just pm'd me a link from Zarg.

It's off to the races.

What a great manual.

It needs to be updated for version 5.0 since there are so many new tricks.

MIDI Clocking of envelopes etc.

It's nice to discover new tools. I have only just started scratching the surface of the BETA. This wil help me to get up to speed using the step sequencer.
