probably not, unless you're playing games.
no problems with quadcore either, although reports are that core duo is a better buy and equal performer with the current software. the E6850 3ghz core duo sells for about $275.....

The quads were wisely released prior to the FSB jump.

Then when the new E series 6750, 6850's came out, they had a significant jump in perfromance.

Since Intel had " 0 " competition at that time, they choose to compete w/ themselves.

The 45nm CPU's, QX series will be one tough customer, and Intel will not be in a hurry to release the slower speeds until AMD's FAB 36 starts coughing up the Phenoms from Germany. They are even backed by the government there for 384,000,000 USD. They know a good bet when they see one.

If they could only have audio friendly chipsets like the NF3 was. I almost bought one way back when, but was more concerned w/ Scope's needs of a proven stable, and well supported core logic chipset.

Audio software seems to be a year behind the latest and greatest CPU's, so buying year old chipsets and CPU's is just good common sense.

I admit, I took a big chance and bought 2 CPU's. The QX9650, and the E6850. I am praying for the E series to do what I need. If it does, I will keep the QX on ice, and sell it for a ton of money years from now, if my logic prooves sensible.

Have you seen what the brand new PIII Tualatins sell for now? Then check out the 3.4GHz Northwoods. I saw this trend a couple years back and hope it holds true. On the other hand, if the E6850 doesn't work, I am set to have the fastest GS4 DAW on the block. Since the 6850 was only 265 shipped ( Tiger Direct ), I could absorb that beating. I have lost more on a football game. :x

Im most interested in a machine that is stable with alot of soft synths and audio tracks at once
Im using alot on NI stuff with nuendo 3
I take it scope4live You use your system live (take that d show)
Is that dfi board better for that?
is this the same board?
DFI LANPARTY LT X38-T2R
this is the only one I cuold find
that is available

I have just upgraded as I sold my pevious gar at a fair price and found good prices for my new PC :

- Raptor 150 Go (I have been using it for almost 2 years and it is perfect !)
- Q6700 (the Q6600 is a better choice because cheaper and easily o/c
- DFI Lanparty P35 (a very good mobo, comprehensive bios, audio hradware can be 100% removed, 3 pci, 4 pcie etc ...
- 4 go Super Talent ddram (they are cheap and are very efficient !)
- 21 DSP (soniccore of course ! I sold my uad Expert before buying this new mobo)

I am very happy with this system but it is rather built to cope with my future needs actually (more pcie, tweakings, some little o/c if needed, etc ...).

Juts my experience...

If I go to the balcony here at my office I can get a glimpse of the fab on the other side of the elbe valley :)

got neither eagle eyes nor a telescope. and it's misty outside by now. can't see the other side. and well, the cleanrooms should be hidden inside (although we attended a visit at a semicondictor fab located near amd (I think it was infineon) where you could take a walk outside a cleanroom with coloured windows and see some space bunnies walk around and carry wafers from a to b :))

sorry, no news on the phenoms.

Hi,

I'm running with a QX6700 with a Zalman silent fan, 2x1GB crucial Ballistix CAS3 RAM modules, 2x 320 GB Seagate Barracuda SATA2 drives on RAID1, and everything on a ASRock 4CoreSATA2 mainboard so that I can keep my old Matrox Parhelia AGP graphicas card (the 3 screens are incredibly useful).

The QX has really nice overclocking capabilities, but didn't find the need to do it.

My only regret is that the motherboard does not support more than 2GB... For the rest it works like a charm.

Cheers..

I have only seen a DFI board once, but owners of any DFI board are just like us Scope guys. They'd rather fight , than switch.

DFI's always seem to give the end user the ultimate amount of tweaks. Every little bump and adjustment, can cause instabilty in performance, so they say, but DFI guys can tweak beyond the tweakers, and claim superior stability and performance, from even the lowest costing older CPU's and chipsets.

http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/sho ... hlight=dfi

The above link shows 21,000 views, and you can appreciate the way they defend their purchases. I thought I was at PlanetZ for a while there. Notice the recent date on the start of that thread, it's retty recent.

I think it's safe to assume, that if you were going to OC an audio DAW, this one has audio/videp/gamers covered.

Abit's Guru OC'ing features are kind of cool also. You could have your audio preset, then your gaming preset. Never used it, but I love the zeal and discoveries these guys come up with. Actually when they OC certain new memory, CPU's, etc. That's how you can check out hardware before you buy it. If it OC's really well, just think if you ran it at stock speeds how long it would last.

I would love to have a DFI board if I was doing only studio work and gaming, no doubt they are the top shelf. But the good old boring stock Intel combos, always seem to pull me back to reality. Why fix something that always served you so well.

stardust wrote:Amazing, I did not realize that there are quad core with AGP MoBos.
Only one.. in two versions.. ASRock 4CoreDualVSTA and 4CoreDualSATA2 :)
ASRock is a child company of ASUS.. Their MoBos are cheap, therefore misseen by many people.. But I've 3 of them (one running for years with an Athlon 2400+) and are very stable.
Unless you really need an AGP slot, it's better to look for a MoBo that can handle more memory or with a faster FSB (The latest QX has a 1033 MHZ FSB.. With a good set of RAM it flies)

You can OC certain parts of the system to squeeze out desired performance w/o affecting the PCI Buss.

The DFI P35's are loathed by many for that. Now the X38 coming next week can have this little beauty to scream with.

http://www.anandtech.com/cpuchipsets/in ... spx?i=3184

Most conservative OC guys use to get the cheapest Intel CPU and get the performance of the most expensive model from OC'ing. Intel sells their high end models first , then waits a couple of months before releasing the low end cheap models, w/ less cache. Can't blame them, when guys like DFI can get you equal performance for 800 USD less than Intel would have you pay.

Personally I like to watch my friend and others burn their stuff up. They upgrade every 18 months and claim to get top shaelf speeds w/o payong for them.

This is partially true.. You can OC a cheap CPU to get the performances of a high end one, but you have to add very expensive cooling systems..
In the other hand, you can overclock a high end CPU and have much more performance than you could ever achieve with the cheap one, since they are usually much better overclockers, plus the bigger cache...

Anyway, pure OC i not the only key to performance.. if the memory is not good, or the graphics card or hard drives are slow, for example, the overall performance will not be great no matter how much you OC the processor.

In recording DAWs specially, disk I/O is critical.. If you can afford to have 4 hard drives and a good RAID card, then a RAID 0+1 stack will give you incredible performance improvements (this configuration is also used for highly transactional database systems.. it's the fastest one, but very expensive since you only get half of the storage space)

So at the end of the day, when mounting a serious DAW, the cost of the processor is not that much taking into account the rest...

You guys are (Phenoms)inal thanks for all the info.

I'm pretty sure I'm not going to OC.SC cards are to precious to me.
I think a good tweakable bios Rock solid big fast memory.
Jimmy V. is right "If it OC's really well, just think if you ran it at stock speeds how long it would last "

DFI looks good +3 PCI.I know the P35 is mature and predictable.
But that DFI LANPARTY LT X38-T2R X38 looks really good also.
If Ithought Pusar cards would work I would build a dual Quad Xeon
I might build one for soft synths later anyway but the pulsar cards are more important
I track live drums thru them well actually everthing.

scope4live Did you build your x38 yet? Come on give up the goods.

I'm sorry this post has so many questions but here is one more.
I'm starting with 3 Western Digital Raptor WD1500ADFD 150GB 10,000 RPM Serial ATA150 Hard Drive - OEM
one for boot Two in a raid for work.
rdavidovich" If you can afford to have 4 hard drives and a good RAID card, then a RAID 0+1 stack "
Should I get two more and raid them form samples?Or partition the one raid?
And now this is really shocking.Has anyone read this article from Toms hardware
about WD 7200 drives being faster than the raptor?

http://www.tomshardware.com/2007/09/19/ ... page7.html
Okay so I can't count questions
Many thanks again

I found RAID 0+1 with the right tuning to be up to 20% faster than RAID 0 in database systems.

but the main driver for setting up a RAID 0+1 stack is to have a mirror for the RAID 0 stack, which is fragile by definition.

If you take regular backups, and can afford to wait the time to do the restore or get a new drive in case of failure, then RAID 0+1 will be too expensive for the benefit you'll get out of it.

In that case, just by separating the system and putting the data in a RAID 0 stack will be enough to keep you happy :)
