yes, but closing SFP without freezing XP is only possible when i load a small project (e.g. the standard startup project) first.

closing SFP whith loaded standard statup project works always (no guaranty).

bigger project may include: STM 4896, Asio 2 32, WAVE 24 Bit, STS 5000, Interpole, B 2003, I/O's of different Cards.
i have 3 cards in the system (Pulsar 2 (first), Electra, Pulsar 1).

i made some tests: opening "bigger" projects (the same project normally crah XP) and closing SFP on a clean system (only start XP and loading the projects and close SFP) did work until i load the "analog source" of my electra -> XP freeze. after restart i try to repeat loading electra analog source then close SFP -> works without freezing....

maybe it depends also on different things (used RAM...). it is very difficult to reconstruct the error...
...i dispair!
on the other side when working my system is very stable and fast when working with big Cubase and SFP projects.

I think you can automatically clear ram/cache/pagefile when you shut down. Maybe this would help XP shut down. It should be in a list of tweaks. Might be worth a try..... best I can suggest.

farmer, start deleting devices one-by-one. One of them will most probably crash the machine when it's unloaded. Find out which, and reconsider how you will use it.

i tried to detect which module/device make the problems...
....it maybe not depends on the loaded devices because the bug also appears while only loaded the standard devices!
after testing i'm nearly shure taht it not depends on the loaded devices.
rather the problem may be the open scope view (scope not hidden)...

Sounds a little familiar...

Have you checked to see whether sfp.exe is still in the "processes" pane of the system task manager after you close it down? (CTRL-ALT-DEL...)

For myself, since upgrading Cubase SL2 to the latest version (of v2), sfp.exe is generally left hanging after closing Cubase & Scope. Most of the time I cannot kill the process either ("access denied" - thanks!)

The system will not then shutdown or restart, so I either have to use the reset button or turn the power off to restart/shutdown!

@Counterparts:
i think the error is a bit different...
in my case it not depends if cubase is open or was opened or not.
and also the problem with the task manager i don't have... because i can't open the task manager after closing because XP freeze.
do you use cubase sx2?
i also use it...

Ah, that is quite a different problem. It could well be XP-related. I dislike that operating system intensely, so still run Windows 2000 at home. I can still use my system after closing Scope/Cubase, but cannot shut it down or restart it properly.

No, SL2. I am steamingly pissed off with Steinberg in that once again they've left a version (v.2) with loads of unaddressed BUGs (stoping any further development in the v.2 line...) and moved on to "v.3" (both SL and SX I believe). So, to stand any chance at all of getting some sequencing software which isn't full of holes, you have to give them yet more money for the upgrade

They've been doing this s*** for over twenty years now - it was true back in the Atari days and it's still true now.

When I can afford the change, I am going to move to using a Mac running Logic, I think. That's some way off yet, unfortunately.

yes, the atari was stable...
...but i never run 20 or 30 stereo audio-tracks on it

I run Win XP before without problems like this. after reinstall (because of a new MoBo) the pronlem appears.
otherwise Win XP is the most stable system since Atari. but with much more power.
with Cubase SL, i do not have any practice.

aha!

here's a tip: when you post problems, always supply all the information around the problem. the fact that you have changed your motherboard and that the system is bad after that is a clear hint.

did you try installing newer motherboard drivers? you should also update your graphics-driver and BIOS.

and, also you should try the universal, not-always-logical trick of swapping PCI ports.

Best of luck!

piddi

Good tip that one - check the maufacturer's website for the latest drivers/BIOS etc. for your board. Which MOBO is it, Farmer? (Also, what chipset does it use?)

It's very easy to be 100% sure, select all objects in the Routing Window and press Delete  I remember 1-2 devices that crash SFP and the whole machine with it.

i tried to dlete all devices in different projects and no error appears...
but in alle the tests i made the last days, windows only freeze if i try to close scope (or windows try to close it while shutting down) and the popup "save project" appears and i press "no"!
if windows shut down and i press cancel everything is ok!

yeah, that 'Save' dialog is wiered - and annoying
it's even mentioned somewhere in the documentation that you have to press 'Cancel' when you mean 'No', same as you found out the hard way...

the rtfm-argument doesn't count in this context, as THAT type of dialog should be totally self explanatory today.

Btw M$ Word comes up with a similiar idiotic thing when you started with a pure text document and don't want to save it in the app's native format - it gets real bitchy about then.
According to my experience half of all 'Office newbies' lose (at least) a couple of work hours due to it...

cheers, Tom
