Installed logic, core audio and midi set themselves up with my i/o h/w , fantastic performance - it just ran perfectly.

Thanks, I've tried that..it appears to be a well kept flaw in Windows XP that can't be solved unless you zero the disk..It is as you say driver related, something to do with XP not allowing a full driver replacement and substituting it's own variant dll's in place of others..
